Entering marks
SBA components, "marked out of", drafts, and importing a marks sheet.
Sidebar → Academic records. Pick your class and subject; the sheet loads with your students down the left.
The name column stays put while you scroll sideways, and your work is saved as a draft as you type — a dropped connection or a closed tab does not cost you the sheet. It still has to be saved to count.
Two things that look alike but are not
This is the part worth reading twice.
Weight is what a component is worth in the final total. It is your school's policy, the same for everyone, and you cannot change it from the marks sheet.
Marked out of is what you marked that piece of work out of. It is your call, and it is set per class and subject — Maths class assessment out of 50 and English out of 30 is perfectly normal.
You enter the raw mark. The system rescales it against the weight. So if Class Assessment is worth 15%, you marked out of 50, and a student scored 40, you type 40 and set Marked out of to 50. You never convert by hand.
There is no school-wide default for Marked out of, on purpose — a default would quietly push you back into converting.
The components
Schools use one of two structures. Which one you see was chosen at setup.
GES School-Based Assessment — five components totalling 100%:
| Component | Weight |
|---|---|
| Class Assessment | 15% |
| Mid-Semester | 15% |
| Portfolio / Practical | 10% |
| Group / Individual Work | 20% |
| End of Semester | 40% |
Class score and exam — the older structure: one class assessment mark out of 40 and an exam out of 60.
Building a component out of several pieces of work
A component like Class Assessment is rarely one mark. You can link Assessments to it — a quiz out of 10, a class test out of 20, homework out of 15 — and the component's mark is worked out from them. Marking the work in Assessments is entering the score; you do not type it twice.
Two rules apply, and the difference matters:
- Bigger pieces count for more. A test out of 20 counts double a quiz out of 10.
- A blank is not a zero. A blank mark is left out of the calculation entirely; an explicit 0 counts as zero. So enter 0 when a student genuinely scored nothing, and leave it blank when you have not marked it yet — otherwise every student reads low until you finish marking.
Importing from a spreadsheet
Import on the marks sheet takes any layout. Upload, map your columns onto the students and components, review, import. You do not have to rearrange your existing marks sheet to match ours.
When the sheet will not accept marks
- Marks are locked. Ahead of report cards, results are locked for the term and entry closes for everyone. Your Exams Officer or Head Teacher unlocks it.
- The subject is not offered to that class. Ask your administrator to check Classes & Subjects.
- A mark is above the denominator. You cannot score 55 on something marked out of 50 — raise Marked out of if the work really was out of more.
To see how far entry has got across the school, an Exams Officer or Head Teacher can open the Marks monitor from the Dashboard.
